Adorned in one of the most iconic Yamaha Grand Prix colours of all time, the XSR900 GP is available in a heritage livery inspired by the machines ridden by legends such as Wayne Rainey to multiple 500cc Grand Prix World Championships, complete with authentic yellow number boards on both front and rear cowlings.

Combining a sense of 1980s Grand Prix nostalgia with the very latest technology including the iconic 890cc CP3 engine, R1-derived six-axis IMU and lean sensitive rider aids, the XSR900 GP combines Yamaha’s Racing history with modern day performance. Yamaha say that the aim was not to create a replica, but instead release a model that pays the utmost respect to the past, while holding its own with the latest in performance and technology. 

The XSR900 GP features an upper cowling reminiscent of this era, not only with a clear influence from the 1980s YZR Grand Prix bikes but also with notes of the FZR and TZR production sports machines of the late 1980s and early 1990s. To maintain the race-bike look, the XSR900’s round LED headlamp is replaced by a compact lens module, neatly hidden in the front cowling.

The bodywork is not only a symbol of the past in looks alone, but the method in which it is fixed in position is also inspired by the 1980s, with a tubed structure connecting the cowling to the frame and straight brackets supporting the dash creating a rider’s view with a genuine golden era feel.

To emphasise the classic cockpit feeling, the upper fairing stay is supported by a nut structure identical to that used for the original TZ250. In true racing style, this structure is fastened with a beta pin, marking the first time Yamaha has used such a fastening on a mass-produced production model for public road use.

The function behind the move from the curvaceous cowlings of the 1970s to the more squared off style of the 1980s was to both improve aerodynamic efficiency and protect the rider from the wind and this is no different with the XSR900 GP.

While the windscreen and individual knuckle guards incorporate a taste of the 1980s; it’s not solely about looks. The power output and gear ratio of the 890cc CP3 engine are identical to that of the XSR900, but the front cowling structure of the XSR900 GP increases both acceleration and top speed while the ducts on the side panels efficiently discharge heat from the radiator to maximise cooling performance. The colour-matched seat cover fits over the passenger seat to complete the racer look with a boxy 1980s style rear end hiding the rear light, while a seat stopper on top of the seat cowling keeps the rider in position.

The Deltabox-style chassis and swingarm are finished in silver to better evoke the era of the 1980s prototypes and emphasise the character of the Deltabox style frame itself.

XSR900 GP SELECTED FEATURES

Race-style clip on handlebars
Separate ‘clip on’ handlebars add to the racer-style cockpit and offer a sportier riding experience. The revised handlebars move the rider further forward on the machine into a sportier riding position, but not excessively. The position offers a balance that can be enjoyed on the road without discomfort. This comfort is emphasised via a thicker, more supportive seat.

The aluminium diecast footrests are adjustable to two different positions but come out of the factory set at the upper position to highlight the sportier riding position.

Tuned rigidity
To accommodate the extra load on the front end of the machine as a result of the more forward riding position, the XSR900 GP areas surrounding the frame have been tuned to optimise stability in turning. The subframe has also been reinforced over the one found on the XSR900.

To further correspond with this front end-led riding style, the XSR900 is the only CP3 model to feature an aluminium steering stem shaft, adjusting rigidity in the steering area to better balance the often conflicting feelings of lightness and stability when changing direction or under rapid deceleration. In conjunction with the lightweight Spinforged wheels and new Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S23 tyres.

High performance brakes and suspension
In line with the mantra of blending yesterday’s style with modern technology, the XSR900 GP boasts the latest in suspension and braking components. The KYB upside down forks are fully adjustable for preload and compression damping as well as rebound damping.

The link-type rear suspension actuates a forward-inclined fully adjustable KYB shock. Remote pre-load adjustment makes customising the ride a simple task. Also fitted with a Brembo radial front master cylinder for added braking confidence.

Yamaha Ride Control (YRC)
Further maintaining the mix of nostalgic style with the latest in high performance technology, XSR900 GP riders can customise their riding experience via Yamaha Ride Control (YRC).  Three pre-set integrated riding modes, SPORT, STREET and RAIN feature factory settings with different intervention levels to suit different conditions. These are complemented by two custom settings, which enable the rider to manually select their own power and intervention settings for the various electronically controlled, lean-sensitive rider aids – all of which can be set using a smartphone via the MyRide app.

5in TFT meter with full connectivity
A new five-inch full colour TFT display is housed in the retro-styled cockpit. While riders can choose from four different themes to suit a range of mindsets, a traditional analogue-style tachometer theme inspired by race bikes of yesteryear truly enhances the period riding experience.

Smartphone connectivity comes as standard on the XSR900 GP via a built-in Communication Control Unit (CCU), ensuring riders can stay connected while riding by linking their smart phone with their machine via the free MyRide Link app. As well as seeing call and message notifications on the 5in TFT display, a new dimension is added to the ride by the possibility of taking calls and listening to music via a Bluetooth headset (not included). Once connected, riders can also make use of the integrated Garmin StreetCross navigation system which will display Turn-By-Turn navigation on the 5in TFT dashboard. There is also the option to provide power to external devices by the new USB Type C socket located near the dashboard.

New ergonomic switchgear
New integrated handlebar switch assemblies enable the rider to operate the wider range of functions of the new XSR900 GP including smartphone connectivity, navigation and riding modes as well as interrogating the various menu options. To aid navigation of busy road environments, a softclick of the indicator switch will flash the turn signals three times for use when lane-changing or when only brief indication is required. A full-click of the switch will result in continuous flashing until 15 seconds has passed and when the machine has travelled more than 150 metres. A new Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) function reacts to sudden braking by engaging the hazard lights to warn road users behind the vehicle is stopping at speed in an emergency situation.

Extra support from advanced six-axis IMU with lean sensitive rider aids
Developed directly from the electronic systems on the R1, the XSR900 GP’s high-tech six-axis IMU constantly measures acceleration in the forward-backward, up-down and left-right directions – as well as the angular velocity in the machine’s pitch, roll and yaw directions. The six-axis IMU is able to send data in real time to the ECU which controls the suite of electronic rider aids, including the lean sensitive Traction Control System (TCS), Slide Control System (SCS) as well as a front wheel Lift Control System (LIF) and Brake Control System (BC).

XSR900 GP also becomes the first Sport Heritage model to be equipped with the third-generation quick shift system, enhancing the ride by enabling clutchless upshifts while accelerating and clutchless downshifts under deceleration in addition to the standard functionality.

The launch event provided an opportunity for the Australian press to explore the first phase of the building along with hearing from Minster for Sport Steve Kamper, Minister for Music and the Night – time Economy and Jobs and Tourism, John Graham, ARDC President Natalie Turmine and ARDC CEO Glenn Mathews.

The first phase of the Innovation Precinct see’s two Australian innovators move into the building. AGI and Forcite. AGI, who are renowned for their roll-cages, have set up shop with more than a dozen Formula Four machines. The aim is to provide an opportunity to find the next Australian F1 driver and putting emphasis on using the Innovation Precinct as an international base to find the next female talent and provide them with the highest level of coaching and training.

“Our aim is to establish the number one elite race academy in Australasia at Australia’s number one race circuit. The on – track location is a real drawcard for the sport’s rising stars as we nurture Australia’s next F1 driver. The shared passion and support from the ARDC is the fuel injector to make this vision become a reality,” said Adam Gotch, principal of AGI Sport.

AGI’s neighbour is Forcite, the Australian smart-helmet manufacturer have been developing their next generation of lid with MotoSchool. Entering a next phase in their development, they offer out their smart-helmets for punters at the MotoSchool to test out their lids, give their an incite to their riding and be able to see a first person view of what their trainers are doing differently.

Forcite will be heading down the path of creating a race-only lid, this will be including MotoGP technology like live-flag update through lighting in the helmet and live broadcasting of a first-person view. Having their HQ next to a track such as SMSP allows for access to a world-class facility to further develop their product and make racing better.

Forcite Engineers will now be able to collaborate with the industry’s best and test our technology on a world – class track day and night. Speaking with Australian Racing Drivers’ Club (ARDC) Spokesperson, Kurt McGuiness, we got some insight into what the precinct means for motorcycle racing.

“Effectively what it means is that we have a dedicated racetrack laboratory for research and development of motorsport technology. This tech will then find its way into road going cars and motorcycles. The benefit for brands here is that they can use the motorsport park to test and develop new technology and put them on the track that same day.” said McGuiness.

Many mentions were made to the fact that this is the answer to Silverstone circuit in the UK. The ARDC and NSW Government have spent $10 million on the trackside precinct and this is only phase one. More buildings will be constructed over the next few years, hopefully bringing more brands and innovation to Australian circuits.

Despite winning two of the last five heats, the Aussie quintet of Jason Doyle, Max Fricke, Jack Holder, Jaimon Lidsey and Chris Holder just fell short of dislodging Denmark from the final spot on the podium. The Aussies finished on 27pts, two behind Denmark, while Poland’s ninth win in the SWC format came with a 33pt haul. Great Britain completed proceedings on 31pts as the powerhouses of world speedway battled it out for SWC supremacy for the first time since 2017.

After keeping its powder dry in the first block of heats, Australia came out swinging in the middle stages of the SWC final, with Jack Holder doing most of the heavy lifting after stirring victories in heats 10 and 11 – the second as a tactical substitute for Lidsey.

Doyle’s second place in heat 12 was also invaluable as the Aussies moved into third, 4pts behind Poland –which had just moved into the overall lead for the first time over the fast-starting Great Britain. But there was more high drama to come.

Doyle won again in heat 14, but the next outing was a hammer blow for Australia – which had booked the final spot in the SWC final after powering through the race-off the day before – when Jack Holder high-sided after contact with Dane Rasmus Jensen. A battered Jack was unable to make the restart, and was replaced by his older brother, Chris, who finished third.

Meanwhile, Poland and Great Britain were back on even terms after 16 heats, setting up a crackerjack final stanza. But a more consistent run home for Poland – 4-1-2-2 results against 2-3-3-3 for Great Britain – saw them take a grip on the trophy.

Poland is now five wins ahead of Denmark (four) on the SWC honour board, followed by Sweden (three) and Australia (two) – those victories coming in 2001 and 2002.

Sherco engineers designed a completely new engine block, shaving a phenomenal 4.5kg in the process, equating to a 28 per cent lighter engine than its predecessor, weighing only 16kg. A new, 13 per cent lighter crankshaft was added. Although 500 grams lighter than before, the diameter has been increased from 110mm to 116mm for increased inertia and a significant reduction in weight at the axis.

A new pre-compression system has been added to the bottom end for improved engine performance. Sitting on top is a new cast cylinder with a faceted design. The intake transfers have increased from five to seven for improved thermodynamics. Cylinder cooling has also been enhanced thanks to redesigned contact surfaces and a 24 per cent increase in the overall cooling surface. A redesigned reed valve system has been employed for optimised atomisation and increased power at low revs.

The engineers then added the most compact five-speed gearbox on the market, completely redesigned, 500 grams lighter with ratios optimised for graded trial sections from one to five. They then paired it with a more compact gear selector system. 28 per cent lighter than before with aluminium selector forks directly articulated on the selector drum. A newly designed 2-piece clutch cover is constructed from magnesium and features an integrated oil-level inspection window and a simplified transmission oil fill point. Behind the trick, new cover sits a diaphragm clutch system which offers users three different positions of modulation adjustment and revised internal components for improved comfort and control.

The most noteworthy engine feature is arguably the all-new trials-specific fuel injection system. The premix system features a 32mm diameter throttle body for optimal efficiency and response with reduced fuel consumption. Atmospheric pressure, throttle position and temperature are all measured via an innovative single multi-function sensor unit which also keeps the overall weight on the complete throttle body unit low at just 350 grams.

Housing the all-new engine is a redesigned, 6 per cent lighter frame with revised geometry for a lower centre of gravity and increased rigidity, resulting in improved turning and traction. Removable forged aluminium side protectors provide improved access, and the integrated polymer frame protectors offer increased ankle grip. A lighter and 21 per cent lower swingarm is connected to the new frame, delivering improved traction in dry and slick conditions.

A new modernised front headlight shell design preserves Sherco’s brand identity and creates styling synergy between Sherco’s Trials and other off-road product ranges. Behind the headlight shell sits the two map switches, which have been relocated and grouped for improved protection and user convenience. The rear fender design has been updated to match the front fender’s profile, achieving improved mud evacuation.

The resigned triple clamps are not only 4 per cent lighter but also sport a cleaner appearance with the bolts recessed into the rear face of each clamp, and the steering stops now positioned on the lower triple clamp. Between the frame sits an enhanced radiator with cores increased from 12 to 19, resulting in improved cooling performance from the same external-sized unit. The radiator coolant fill spout has been tilted forward by 30° for simplified servicing, and the protection grille is now equipped with clips for quick removal and installation.

A new 2.2L fuel tank featured an integrated ultra-compact fuel pump developed by Sherco that features a bypass recovery sub-tank to prevent fuel loss. The air filter box volume has been increased by 7 per cent combined with a new, 11 per cent larger air filter element resulting in increased power at low revs, increased torque, and improved engine response.

The internal volume of the silencer body has been increased by 35 per cent for improved strength, torque, and durability. Thermoformed compressed packing has been added for enhanced longevity, and the silencer body design has been updated for simplified disassembly and muffler servicing.

The rider controls haven’t been forgotten either, with the gear lever and rear brake pedal now sport tips featuring metal injection moulding (MIM) technology and anti-clog hinge systems. New steel micro-fusion foot pegs have been added for improved central stability, mud evacuation and increased grip. Each foot peg is fastened without requiring a nut and features an anti-sag stopper.

The updated Launch Control System now features an rpm limiter which can be adjusted in 500 rpm increments between 6,000 rpm and 14,000 rpm for optimised launches when the gate drops. Both systems are controlled through the Yamaha Power Tuner App.

Slimmer body and improved ergos
The new 2024 YZ250F has a slimmer, flatter body design for improved control, including a more narrow fuel tank, lower airbox and more narrow radiator shrouds. The rider triangle is also improved with increased legroom between the seat and footpegs for greater rider comfort.

Revised suspension settings
Class leading, fully adjustable KYB coil springtype fork with speed-sensitive damping delivers exceptional balance between handling and bump absorption for championship-winning performance. New for 2024, the fork now includes hand-adjustable knob for toolless compression adjustment. Linkage-type rear suspension features a KYB shock with revised settings to provide less pitch on corner entry/exit for improved stability.

New air intake design Optimised
intake path draws air from under the side covers and seat allowing for a lighter, slimmer and more compact body. This redesign allows radiator shrouds to be slimmer and the airbox cover to be lower and more narrow. The more efficient intake path also boosts mid- to high-rpm engine performance.

Advanced 250cc four-stroke engine
Featuring a high-spec piston, aggressive cam profiles and forward positioned intake cylinder head layout, the YZ250F’s advanced fourstroke engine is known for its broad, useable powerband and class-leading low-end and midrange torque. 2024 YZ125
The 2024 YZ125 continues to represent an important evolution in Yamaha’s two stroke lineage. 2022 saw the first full model change to the model in more than 15 years. Significant improvements included the thoroughly reworked liquid-cooled 125cc to produce more power.

2024 YZ450F
The ultimate open class YZ YZ450F is the bike to beat in Australia with Dean Ferris leading the charge following Aaron Tanti’s 2022 ProMX title. Its reversed cylinder head layout, forged aluminium piston, 39 mm titanium valves, lightened crank assembly and dry sump lubrication contribute to a light, compact machine for broad pulling power across the entire rev range.

Adjustable Traction and Launch Control
Running the same revised smartphone Power Tuner app as the MY24 YZ250F, the YZ450F also benefits from the Traction Control System that communicates wheel slip to the ECU, tuning the engine to maintain ideal rear wheel traction. Three levels can be selected: HIGH, LOW or OFF. The Launch Control System continues to implement traction control and features an rpm limiting setting, which can be adjusted in 500rpm increments between 6000rpm and 11,00-0rpm. Both systems are controlled through the Yamaha Power Tuner App.
