SX1 Race Results

The SX1 class delivered unforgettable drama and fierce competition at the AUSX Open, with Hunter Lawrence (#96, Honda HRC) taking two of the night’s three races to close out the season in spectacular fashion. Joey Savatgy (#17, Honda HRC) battled adversity, including a flat rear tyre in the final race, but had done enough to claim his first premier-class Fox Australian Supercross Championship.

An injured Dean Wilson (#1, Froth/SCT Logistics/Honda Racing) put on a heroic performance, winning over fans with a valiant and gritty second-place finish in the finale and came agonisingly close to taking the title. Jett Lawrence (#18, Honda HRC) and race one winner Cooper Webb (#3, Star Racing Yamaha) were notably absent from the final race due race two incidents with bike damage and injury, respectively, but their earlier performances added depth and excitement to the event.

AUSX Open winner, Hunter Lawrence: “It was incredible. The adrenaline rush from the stadium was unreal. That feeling was honestly a cooler feeling than winning my championships. Having the country behind you is unreal, we cop a lot of shit in America so to feel that at home is unreal. It’s tough to put into words.”

2024 Fox Australian Supercross Overall Champion, Joey Savatgy: “It was stressful, much more than I wanted it to be. I was proud of the effort. We came here with a big goal to get rid of the #17 and the side goal was to win the whole thing which would have been cool in front of this crowd, but not tonight.”

Jett Lawrence: “It (AUSX Open) was a good reset. And to actually have a feeling of who is behind me. You always hear the Aussies are behind us and you want to believe it, but you haven’t fully got to feel it yet. I got to feel a bit of it in 2019 but it was so long ago you forget the feeling. To have that, when we came out for the opening ceremonies, I still get chills now talking about it. Since we’ve been pros we’ve dreamt about it, but we haven’t got it. Coming back here and getting a crowd of more than 40,000 Aussie fans is unreal honestly. You can’t pay money for that feeling, it takes the top of all our championships. It was unreal to hear them every lap.”

SX2 Race Results

The SX2 class also delivered a night of thrilling and dramatic racing at the AUSX Open, culminating in Shane McElrath (#12, Polyflor/Froth/Honda Racing) clinching the championship with a dominant performance. McElrath showcased his experience and precision across all three races, including a hard-fought final where could have cruised to a championship win, but instead chose to move through the field to secure victory in style.

Kayden Minear (#66, KTM Race Team) impressed all assembled with sensational starts and consistent speed. Canadian Col Thompson (#2, Polyflor/Froth/Honda Racing) and New Zealand sensation Brodie Connolly (#88, Polyflor/Froth/Honda Racing) fought fiercely throughout the night, completing the final race podium for an all-Honda finish. The intensity of the battles, coupled with Minear’s emerging talent and McElrath’s calculated brilliance, provided a fitting climax to the SX2 championship.

Tanti, fresh from his championship win in the 2022 ProMX Championship, showed he has the skills indoors as well as out, after finishing second at the opening round of the Supercross Championship, sandwiched between US riders, Justin Brayton and Dean Wilson.

In front of 18,000 spectators, Tanti steered his YZ450F to the front of the pack in the opening laps and set down a furious pace that saw a four rider pack break away in the 20-lap SX1 main event. Tanti, Matt Moss, Brayton and Wilson edged away from the rest of the field but continued to fight for position at every opportunity.

Tanti led at the halfway point, but pressure was coming as the four-time champ Brayton, managed to find away through Moss and Wilson and set his sights on the lead. But Tanti wasn’t about to give it up without a fight. In an intense battled that mirrored their heat race early in the night, Tanti and Brayton locked into combat.

Tanti, fresh from his championship win in the 2022 ProMX Championship, showed he has the skills indoors as well as out.

Brayton would pull a move, Tanti would counter. Tanti would clear-out, Brayton would wind him back in. Then Tanti went on a wild ride through the whoops that saw him lose control, have both feet off the footpegs as he torpedoed down the infield. Somehow, he manged to wrestle back control of his bike as it speared off track, maintain his lead and not take out any innocent bystanders in the process.

But the moment wasn’t lost on Brayton and within a few laps, he moved by the determined Australia as he was regathering his composure and checked out for a victory. Tanti steadied the ship and despite a late race charge from Wilson, Tanti crossed the finish line in second place and won the crowd over with his desire and desperation.

“That’s all I had,” Tanti said after the gruelling affair. “I wanted to charge as hard as I could for as long as I could and I did that, but Justin was just that bit better than me tonight, so congratulations to him. I’m pretty happy with how the night went and it gives me some confidence knowing that I can put up a good fight against some of the most experienced and professional supercross riders in the world. I did run out of gas towards the end, but I think if I can just keep a little more composure in the early stages and manage my breathing a little better, I can stay in it for longer. Thanks to the CDR Yamaha Monster Energy team for getting us up to speed and the crowd for having my back all weekend. I could hear them all round the track and its awesome to have so much support here In Melbourne,” Tanti ends.

The night wasn’t as good for teammate, Luke Clout. Clout had just returned from injury but was battered and bruised from a crash just a couple of weeks ago. Still, he was able to generate plenty of speed over the weekend and was well placed in the 20-lap final until he lost the front end early in the race. While a low-speed crash, he fell awkwardly and took some time before remounting. He rejoined the race before going down again, this time injuring his thumb. He was able to pick himself up and complete the main event at a slow pace, but early diagnosis shows some internal issues with his thumb that will require further investigation. It is unlikely Clout will line up for this weekend’s round in Adelaide.

“I felt pretty good on the track all night and I got myself into a good position in the main and tried to settle in behind Aaron. But in the right hand turn after the triple, I lost the from and fell, then I got going again only to fall once more after hitting another rider. The RACESAFE Team feel there is a break in there and a quick X-Ray shows damage so I will see my surgeon on Monday for a full assessment and what treatment needs to be done. It’s not the way I wanted to start the championship and I was so keen to get back racing. I apologise to the team and our sponsors for letting them down, but I will be back more determined than ever once this is sorted,” Clout offers.

The CDR Yamaha International team also returned to Marvel Stadium on Saturday Night for the second and final round of the World Supercross Championship and it was again and mixed night for the team. With Tanti and US based Kyle Chisholm doing the SX2 (250cc) duties, it was left to Josh Hill to be the lone ranger in SX1 on the YZ450F.

Tanti continued his good form and in the three-moto final format, Tanti finished with 9-1-3 results to claim third on the night and fourth in the overall SX2 championship. It proved to be a far more challenging night for Chisholm who was tangled in the opening lap carnage in all three motos and finished outside the top 15.

In SX1, Hill battled hard in each and every race to come home seventh for the night even with a low points score in race two due to a crash. His night was highlighted by a stirring ride in the final race where he come from just inside the 10 ten to snare third.

Round two of the Australian Supercross Championship now moves across to the Wayville Showgrounds in Adelaide this weekend where the action is expected to really pick up now that the championship is underway and every rider has a race under their belts after a two year layoff due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rogers moves across from the Yamalube Yamaha team and looks forward to the new surrounds and environment to continue progressing in his career. Rogers has proven to be fast, as fast as anyone on his day, with plenty of rides in his rookie MX2 season in 2021 showing he is capable of mixing it with the biggest names in the MX2 class.

Working with the Whitten family at WBR Yamaha, Rogers will be looking to cash in on his undoubted speed and turn that into results both at a state and national level. At just 18 years of age, Rogers has time on his side and is out to make his second year in MX2 memorable for all the right reasons.

Rodgers returns to the MX2 class after the 2021 seasons were cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“2021 was my first year in MX2 and while there was speed and some good results, there was some mistakes which I need to reduce to be a contender at each and every round,” Rogers begins. “I’m thankful Yamaha were keen to keep me on board and that Travis and Nathan from WBR Yamaha offered me a great opportunity for the new season. We already have a few plans in place and I’m looking forward to getting stuck into a new year with the team. Their bikes have been proven to be good, we have a great group of sponsors on board and hopefully we can get a full season completed. I’m excited for 2022 already,” Rogers said.

Joining Rogers will be young Yamaha sensational Ryder Kingsford. Like Rogers, Kingsford has been a long-term product of the Yamaha Junior Racing program and after a strong 2022 season where he finished in second place in the inaugural MX3 championship, he makes the move to not only the WBR Yamaha team, but also steps up to the MX2 division.

Ryder Kingsford has already won multiple Australia junior championships in motocross and supercross…

Kingsford is equally skilled at motocross and supercross, having both style of tracks at his disposal in his own back yard in Goulburn. He has already won multiple Australia junior championships in motocross and supercross and is eager to make the big leap into the professional ranks.

“I know stepping into the MX2 class is a big decision to make but Yamaha and WBR were happy for me to take it and I thank them for showing the faith in me when I could have stayed another year in MX3. Getting the support of the team at WBR Yamaha is awesome and we have already had a successful couple of days testing and I feel right at home on the bike and with the team. We plan on doing as many events as possible before the start of the Pro MX Championship in March so I’m well prepared for what’s to come.”

Ryder will be making a quick jump from the MX3 class into MX2 in 2022 with WBR Yamaha…

Travis Whitten, team manager of the WBR Yamaha Bulk Nutrients team, is enthusiastic about his team for 2022 and knows the importance of the development role within Yamaha.

“Since becoming part of the Yamaha Racing group in 2018, we have help guide and assist several riders onto bigger and better things within Yamaha. It’s a role we take seriously as we mould young riders as they leave the YJR program and move to the senior and professional ranks. With Levi and Ryder, we feel we have two fast and dedicated young riders who both want to forge ahead with their racing careers. Our aim is to get Levi into the top five in MX2 as we believe he has the speed to run there each weekend and expose Ryder to the top level of racing in Australia and fast track is improvement.” Said Whitten.
